Mahaffey

Rockdale County Sheriff’s Investigator Brian Lamar Mahaffey was shot and killed in the line of duty on Saturday, May 8, 2010, while serving a search and arrest warrant.

On May 8, investigators with the Narcotics and Vice Unit, along with investigators with the Criminal Investigation Unit and several other deputies were serving a search and arrest warrant on a rape, kidnapping and aggravated assault suspect.  The suspect was armed and hiding in a closet when he opened fire on Investigator Mahaffey and other deputies.

Although Mahaffey was wearing his body armor, he was hit once in the arm, and a second shot struck under his vest.  He was fatally wounded by the suspect. Rockdale County Sheriff’s deputies and investigators returned fire, killing the suspect.

Investigator Mahaffey had been with the Sheriff’s Office for five years and began his career as a detention deputy.  He was transferred to the Uniform Patrol Division in 2007, and then to the Criminal Investigation Unit and assigned to the Narcotics and Vice Unit in 2009.

He is survived by a wife, a son and a daughter.  Mahaffey was a faithful deputy, husband, father, son and brother.

He will never be forgotten by the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office.  Mahaffey’s badge number, 2330, has been retired.
